Russian divers rescue the beer, but lose the truck
When a truck loaded with 10 tonnes of beer from the Rosar brewery fell through the ice at Omsk, divers were sent in to effect a salvage. They only partially succeeded.

Ice cold in Ormsk
Six divers from the Russian Ministry for Civil Defense and Emergencies worked in surface temperatures of -28 degrees Centigrade to locate the truck which had fallen through ice on the Irtysh river.

Once found, the men used a repair vehicle adapted from a T-72 tank to drag the truck to an ice hole and winch it back to the surface. With a fitting sense of priority, the divers set about salvaging the beer, and had just finished offloading the kegs and several thousand bottles when the rope snapped and the truck plunged back under the ice and became lodged.

It is now unlikely to be rescued until the spring thaw. Fortunately, the beer is still quite drinkable...

The water in beer freezes at 0 degrees C, but the alcohol will remain liquid down to -113.8 degrees C. The higher the alcohol content of the beer, the less likelihood that it will freeze solid.

The wreck of the Wallachia in the Clyde is well known for the cargo of beer and stout it still carries.
