This is a bit after the fact, but thought it might whet the appetites of the group heading to Cayman soon. We enjoyed a wonderful, sunny week in Grand Cayman Jan. 3-10 with the whole family (Ahna 17 and Andy 15), taking 9 year old Emily for the first time. Doug's younger sister Kristine joined us as well, and it was great fun joining her u/w as she did 2 "resort course" dives. Emily loved snorkelling and identifying all the fish whose names she has learned from our pictures the past few years. However, she has already decided snorkelling doesn't get her close enough, and is eager todive asap. Viz was probably 80-100 ft. on the shore dives, and 150ish on the wall and boat dives (after 100 feet does it really matter?!) We saw plenty of the typical Cayman u/w life; groupers, snappers, angels, eels, turtles, lobsters, wrasse in large schools, huge schools of blue tangs and surgeon fish, many beautiful filefish, etc.
One highlight was seeing a yellow ray 3 days in a row at different sites. They are well camoflaged in the coral, and allow a surprisingly close approach. Always makes me wonder what else I may have floated right over and just not seen. I was "sudafed-diving" all week, due to an unfortunately timed bout of the flu the week prior, but found I could eventually get down. However, Doug and the kids say I was quite a sight when I sufaced to the boat the first time after about 40 min. at 40-50 ft. Gratefully I did not experience any reverse block, but the pressure changes and re-expanding air in my irritated sinuses had forced a bunch of bloody sn... well, you get the picture, and have probably been there- done that too. I'm just glad I was holding the camera at the time. Speaking of pictures, the attached (for anyone who cares) pics were taken with a Sea to Sea MX10 (film) with attached strobe.
