Happy Veterans Day to the Great Quarry Divers
From Bryan Palmer . . .
Saturday Scott the rock and I were out at bainbridge! we saw John when we first arived as he was waiting for his students. scott and i hit up Access A. we headed down to the deep boat and got kinda side tracked or diccombobulated and ended up in the hole. we decided to dive along the wall somewhere in the 100 foot range and then headed back in the 50-60 foot area. From that point we went to look at the bulldozer and then the cement trunk. and ended our dive, all in all it was a good dive but all i can say is it was warmer in the water then OUT. not only can the Rock cook but he makes some Good Coffee too. our dive time was 40 minutes at 105ish ft. I stoped over to see Newly certified mother Diana watching as her son Mark was doing his first OW dives along with danny a guy from up North bloomsburg area i believe and Pete bohling was joining them as DM.
Sunday saw me out at BSC again this time i was teaming up with Ron Lobb and James Zimmerman, aswell as Fellow DIT's Nate Brommer and Chris Mayo( Diving his new Backplate and bladder from Diverite). we headed down in the deep boat from from access A. We hit the deep boat after a few minutes of orientering and then took and once over. from there we headed to the north end of the hole and head south over the rubbish pile and then came up the "stairs" and headed back up the road and to the buldoser and cement truck a good dive of 29 minutes at 105' still a jellyfish or 2 floating around BSC.
Our second dive saw us going down to the was and out the north wall at around 95' very "spotty Vizbut once out a little it opened up to 30+' ,"they all agreaded cause that was "how far ahead I was" fwe truned aroudn about 20 minutes out and headed back at maybe 60' to the Point and did our 3 minute stop. and then over and up the great bg hill. there were a few small mouth bass out to look at :). dive time of 35 with a depth of 95'. Newly certified divers Diane and Brian were out to do a dive and then started there adv OW god luck to you all.
Jim brown and Vern were out playing with their cameras and doing a long extended dive. Cindi LU and her son josh as well as scott the rock joined us as the 2nd shift divers came with lunch much appeciated!! I am out for a little while so see you all in 2 weeks

Darth and I took the deep route on Sunday, circumventing the bottom dwellers in Bryan Palmer's party. Bryan, Chris, Nate and Ron were geared up ahead of us since we were on Darth time so Bean and I made our usual fun run in Access A. The sunshine was awesome and would have shed brilliant ambient light on Darth's pics but he had a case of battery drain, or was it brain drain?
We passed the Dozer after a couple of pics with my rig then on to the Deep Boat. Most of the boat was in view and you could easily see the platform 35' above. Check out the snapshot of Darth on the bow, shining his light on his fat little chin - I guess he wanted me to take his picture. This pic is testament to using the right light source - this Ikelite DS125 strobe rocks at 100'! More importantly, you must choose the proper subject - ain't Darth cute!? On to the ridge of the hole and eastward to the Step Van and Tanker. We had good vis here, especially beyond the Tanker. I'm guessing the Barn is in good vis shape based on what I saw here. Back to the Van and Toolbox then SW to the wall. The water was clear between us but distance was quite limited at 95'. We missed the Blossom Tree and Blast Shack and even missed the Pumphouse as we stayed right at 95' around the Pond and back to the Dozer. The Flats below the north wall were clear and guided us on a nice slow ascent to begin our deco in the Bowl. The scarecrow is in fine shape in the Pennsy thanks to Cindy and Josh. He looks a little like Kevin, don't you think? We cruised the west wall of the Bowl during our deco and while the trees remain submerged, no fish were found hanging in the branches. We did see a couple of jellies cruising about, an unusual sight this late in the year.
Cindy and Josh arrived about noon with lovely homemade chicken corn soup. Thanks Cindy. Josh was doing another AOW dive with Instructor John Gross who was on site with yet another class. Pete Bohling was DM. The Rock showed up too, to continue his DIT practical duties. Just a beautiful day on the dive site. The vis is definitely clearing up and the water is inviting as ever.
Stay tuned for details of the Uptown Darth wreck diving adventure, tentatively slated for May 15-16, 2004 in Beaufort, NC with Discovery Diving, aboard the SeaQuest II with Capt. Jerry Smith. We'll have ALL 16 spots available for wreck-hungry divers! Sharks anyone????

Thursday- Ever find yourself wondering if you did something that needs done from time to time, but pretty sure you'll be ok if you wait just a little bit? Well I didn't, and I need to. Kulp and I went out to the quasi-new boat, but it wasn't there no more. Like I said a few weeks ago, it wasn't meant to be on the bottom. And now it isn't anymore. So bummed out we spend most of the dive on the Quest. That thing I needed to do, but didn't. I could've sworn I charged my light before the dive last week, which meant I'd be fine for thrusday. Appeartly I didn't. After the dive Kulp reminded me that I should have charged it, and that I frequently lampoon him about using an argon bottle in Aug, in Sept, Oct and now Nov when the water is still comfie and in the 60's. And that fair is fair. So here I admit to it, in the dive report. Yea, I got in the water planning to do a 90min+ dive with a light that had about 20mins worth of charge on it.... but I don't need no argon!!
Sunday- Wabank. Kulp and me got back to doing what we do best, busting on each other and diving. It's been quite awhile since I was at Wabank. And when I'm at Wabank I have exspections. Step off the dock, adjusted my belt, drop below the surface full expecting incredible Wabank viz.... Couldn't see the platform, couldn't see nothing. Poped my head up to make sure I drove to the right quarry, I expect this kind of stuff at Myerstown. Well the viz wasn't up to Wabank's high standards, but we're use to it and all gear up and wet already so off we went. If you're waiting for the part where we descend and find clearer water... Kulp and I are still waiting on that one ourselves. Time spend under the water diving is always enjoyable. Time spend above the water is always entertaining. Like divers on the shore heckeling the rescue class in the water, and the rescue class who was heckeling back (and hungry too, all those pizzas!!). Although after asking for a pizza, someone asked em what they wanted on their Tombstone. And no one in the water said anything, I guess they didn't want the pizza afterall.

Now that DiveMasters can enter an intership and eventually teach Discover Scubas, I had the time and motivation to give Instructor Ray Becker a hand in running a Discover for a troop of 12-14 year old boy scouts. Over the years I have totally forgotten how exciting it is to take your first breath underwater. Those kids had a blast. We had to pry them out of the water. They were cold, shivering and getting blue lips and trying to bribe us to stay in the water!
Do something different and take a trip down memory lane and get out and just see a Discover Scuba at either Golden Meadows or Ephrata Rec, relive what it was like to take that first breath underwater! You will be amazed at a persons first expression upon surfacing!!!!!
Get ready for some Ice Diving this winter - a true experience unlike any other in diving!!
Keep on diving and LIVE THE ADVENTURE!!!
