| Greetings to the Great Quarry Divers From Mike Nast . . . Saturday we were blown out, but Sunday we were on. The Tuna Seazure out of Little Egg Harbor NJ is a six-pack that cruises at 25 knots. We hit the San Jose a freighter that sunk in a 1942 collision. It still has a lot of relief on and plenty of identifiable wreckage, mast, bollards, portholes (or where they used to be). The viz was great, at about 30-35 feet in 110 feet of water at 54 degrees. I did two dives, 45 mins with an hour run time and a second at 40 mins with an hour run time on 28% bottom mix and 90% deco mix. I caught one big lobster with huge claws and a smaller one. It was a great day on the ocean and we were back on the dock by 2:30. There aren't going to be too many more days like this remaining this year.
From Darth Vern . . . I had the distinct priviledge of finishing my Discover Scuba internship with Troop #54 at Golden Meadows this past Sunday night. Above is their group picture I took when we all finally made it to the deep end. We had a blast. Just to see the expression on young peoples faces, makes all the work worthwhile. Kathy Stevens graciously kept a watchful eye over me as I gave the introduction briefing and then the in water demonstration ans skills. Once they all hit the deep-end it is like an underwater circus. Kids going everywhere. Well I finished my internshio and can now give Discover Scuba all by my little self! Also congratulations to our own Mike Nast who was named one of the "Lawyers' on the Fast Track" an award bestowed to 29 lawyers under the age of 40!!! From Diana Sholl . . . Cindy called and left me a message today, letting me know it is now my duty as a certified diver to give a dive report! I am so excited to be associated and part of the family at Smokey's! Let me start by telling you that you have the greatest staff at Smokey's! Cindy has been a great influence since I first inquired about dive classes for myself, my son and my best friend. Although she was not present at the classes, I heard her voice every time I entered the water - "If you have air, you can breath and you are all right!". She has been very patient and helpful while I have been selecting my dive gear. John Gross was our instructor - what patience and sense of humor this mans has! I cannot thank him enough! Pete, Nate, Brian and Scott have been very supportive and encouraging as well! It has been lots of fun getting to know everyone - I look forward to diving with all of them again and to meeting new divers too! Okay- enough thank you's - here is my dive report for last weekend. November 15, 2003 My son, Mark, and I ventured out to Bainbridge, Access A last Saturday to encourage and support Vivian on her final check-out dives. Mark just received his certification the weekend before and was anxious to go on his first dive without an instructor - so, he and I headed out along the North Wall. We ended up running into several other divers, where the visibility was only about 6 feet. Once we cleared the others, the vis improved to about 10-15'. We found lots of bass along the rock crevices. There was an area of short thick greenery growing, where Mark noticed hundreds of baby bass!! I took a picture but it did not turn out very good - guess who's taking a photography class! On our second dives, Mark and I separated. Mark budded up with Scott the Rock! Scott took Mark on a tour along the South end. I joined John, Nate and my friend Vivian for her final check-out dive! Vivian has overcome so many fears to join me on this amazing journey, I can't thank her enough - she is an amazing friend. Vivian had a small problem with removing the mask, but John's reassuring words, she regrouped and completed her final skill! Congratulations Vivian!! John took Vivian on a tour down to the boat and around the cement mixer. Nate and I were to follow them but due to the visibility, we couldn't find them down at the boat. So, we headed slowly back to shore. I think I was finally able to get my bouyancy correct on our 3 minute, 15' stop. At least I know how it feels now!! Vivian and I are planning to go out again this Saturday - as long as the weather permits! I hope to see more people out there too! I just can't get enough of this - I LOVE DIVING!! Keep on diving and LIVE THE ADVENTURE!!! |
