TNIs Visit the BSC Hump Divers - With Willow Springs Park closed this week, TNIs Gerhard Maree and Tom Pritchard compromised their values and visited the BSC Hump Divers last night. Apparently most of the Humpers were home off gassing after their NC trip, so turnout was low. Jim Brown treated Gerhard, Mike Nast, and me to a tour of the rim and south wall, a little jaunt that Jim calls "the fun run." Jim can fill you in on the dive details in his report, since I'm not really authorized to write reports for any other venue besides Willow. Speaking of Willow, I feel pressed to disabuse everyone of two rumors that are circulating about Willow's closing this week. First, it is not true that the rain overflowed the quarry which then contaminated the local waste disposal facility. Equally untrue is the rumor that the local waste disposal facility overflowed into the quarry and improved the viz. My sources tell me that the problem at Willow isn't serious and that diving will return in short order, probably within a few days. Hope to see some new faces at Willow next week!

Another Wednesday evening dive for a freshwater rinse for Palm and me...We were graced with two from the TNI gang at Willow since it is closed for the week. Tom and Gerhard respectfully requested a tour of the bottom, fondly known as my Fun Run. Becky Tallman and Joe Dormer showed up to show us up diving wet. Palm joined them on their plan since he was rinsing his wet suit after NC. Mike Nast arrived too so the four of us toured the stairs, step van/tanker, boulder, blast shack, pond, deep boat, pumphouse and Bowl. The vis below 60' is nothing short of spectacular and actually created a euphoria unbeknownst to Tom and Gerhard. They swore they were at Willow even though the vis contradicted this fundamental belief. We also observed unique interaction with the BSC turtle at the pumphouse. He hasn't had much attention lately and was quite spunky in his maneuvers. Our ascent began at the pumphouse with about 10 minutes of deco. The Bowl is pretty cloudy with algae limiting the sight distance. We made our way around the south wall past the water tank and reels, past the aquarium and to the exit. Everyone cleared deco by this time and we made our egress through the same door on the steep path. The water is exceptional! A nice dive to 99ffw for 46 on air, bottom temp 41F.

Steve and crew were out doing more platform maintenance and actually lost a platform to the bottom in front of the Pennsy. Apparently there are some characters at the site who poke holes in the barrels with a dive knife. In the process of replacing two barrels, one of the platforms up-ended and headed for the bottom, coming to rest just ESE of the Pennsy. Next Wednesday the guys will be back in with lift bags and barrels to reset the platform. Why don't you join us for a mid-week dip!? Everyone is welcome

5/19 Wednesday night Diving at BSC - I was doing a nice freshwater rinse from North Carolina the weekend before I dove with Becky Tallman and Joe Dormer. The 3 of us were diving wetsuit but that didn't stop us from racking up some time, we started in the lagoon under the protection of the pavilions due to the threatening sky that loomed above. Headed in and cruised around there and over to the bowl were we were aiming for the platform with the dolphins but do to the bad visibility and lack of light never hit it. Cruised around that area and then back to the lagoon for a while and over to the weeds where we were graced with 6-8 catfish out for a playful time, they came up and took a look at there new underwater friends before becoming slight skittish all and all Joe did well for his first dives since being certified last year. I had a max depth of 36 feet and dive time of 51 minutes. I stayed in the water snapping some shots and video in 3-4 feet right in the lagoon of the sunfish when one of the little buggers bit me on the lip and that was that for the night, I figured that means I have been underwater long enough.

Saturday 5/22 - Saturday saw me helping out with Bill Siwiec open water class as a divemaster along with DIT's Tom Pritchard and James Zimmerman. Students were Jeff, Marie, Maria and Emel. They all did well and I believe they finished up on Sunday as New OW Divers. I think the high light of this was the Tired diver tow where everyone of the Inst, DM, & DIT's got pulled around the Quarry. We are also visited by 2 water snakes that were just out to sun them selves. The Small Mouth Bass have laid there eggs so be careful were you step

Sunday 5/23 - Sunday came way to Quick, with me awaking at 2:45am and meeting Instructor Kent Hirsh in Lancaster to hit the road for Nj by 4 am. We arrived in Brielle, NJ a little after 6 am and started to load the boat. We would be diving on the Spring tide for the day. It was a nice boat small 6 pack but with only 3 divers and a Capt. and mate it made it very nice, NO crowds here. It was a 2 hour ride out to the wreck some of it spent sleeping and the relaxing. I did 2 dives on the gulf trade 35 minutes at 100’ spotted several lobsters but all were to small for the taking. Kent ended up doing one dive for 50 minutes it was to cold must be that warm mexician water getting to him. What a great day to start diving on the East Coast. Bottom temp was about 43 so it is still drysuit diving. Only one causality of the day while packing up to go home I set my fins on Kent truck roof and we headed off. Well to say the least one fin in fine the other well the fin and strap held up to NJ traffic but the buckles didn’t so I Guess I am glad that scuba pro is here. What a better reason to get new fins then having one of your fins trampled in traffic. Well till next time see you underwater blowing bubbles

I had the priviledge of diving Sunday with Frank Herring [fresh off his Adv. Nitrox class] and Gerhard Maree. I also talked Gerhard into letting me try his ScubaPro split fins and being a "Volo Addict" I decided to give them an honest test. I am proud to report that they are every bit as good AND easier on the ankles and knees! I am definatley adding a pair to my dive gear! I also tested out a new ScubaPro MK25/S600 reg at depth. It performed well and I could also feel the increased breathability when using the adjustment knob. The reg breathed well at depth [100ft] and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a high end reg!!!

Keep on diving and LIVE THE ADVENTURE!!!
