| Hello Divers, Frost on the Lake Well tonight's weather forecast calls for a heavy frost. While this signifies that winter is near it also brings to close another season at the Wabank Lake. Wednesday and Thursday evening dives have ceased until next year. Wetsuits will be seen less around the waters edge, let alone in it and dry suits will become the fashion to wear at the Amish Caribbean. Some changes for the Fall and Winter months. We will be open on Saturdays and Sundays starting at 8am. It is possible for us to open earlier if you bribe us with homemade hot breakfast. It is imperative that you call ahead to schedule your dives on the weekend. We will not be having any staff waiting for possible divers to show. Please email us with the numbers in your party and the times you wish to dive. You will receive a confirmation email for your reservations. If for any reason you can not amail us then Please Call Frank at 717-615-2898 and leave a voice massage. This will be in effect until spring once again arrives. We are looking for a few more good men and woman to staff the lake. In exchange for dive privileges and air for work dives, you will be required to staff at least one four hour shift at the lake per week. You will be expected to perform various underwater and above water tasks to maintain the environment. Staff members are encouraged to continually be seeking to increase their skills and at all times to provide the safest dive atmosphere that we can. Along with this you will be required to interact with the clientele in a professional manner at all times. Propensities to Dowabeeisms are ok. If interested in becoming or maintaining your staff positions please send email or contact Frank at 717-615-2898. To all of you who have assisted at one time and another my Thanks to you. Wabank is what it is, A great place to dive. Because of your assistance. We dove the Leola Quarry vis was at zero and why does the lyrics from that song "ooo that smell " come to mind? Maximum depth was 17 feet with Black water from 10 ft down. My buddy Rick and I ended up smack into the remnants of the crusher shed. While on the surface lowering our heart rates we got to watch Vern H's bubbles follow our path. He erupted to the surface exclaiming "whoa baby what the heck was that I went into? Whatever it was, it no longer has a roof" That's what I love about Vern always thinking of the other divers in making the site safer. The highlight of the dive was the wonderful hospitality of our Amish neighbors. From taking our equipment down to the edge by horse and wagons and brut strength to a scrumptious meal made by Mary Zook and family. The fellowship was great and the food plentiful. Afterwards we gave a demonstration to the kids and adults of all our equipment and dive techniques. You can read more and see the pictures on Vern's column on the Smokey's web site. Just click the smokies link on our home page. Our first fish (see the pictures darin has on our photo page) weigh in at 2lbs and are 16 plus inches long. My how they have grown in two tears. Mazzies Restaurant in Leola became the first to try them and Ralph Mazzie himself called me to say "That was the best fish any of us have ever tasted" So look for the fish that you have dove with to appear at your finer dinning establishments soon. Thanks Ralph and special thanks to Jim and Helen who helped me thru the first filleting and cooking of the Bass. Helen was right, all that Lemon Pepper seasoning she has been putting in the water and in the cages did make a difference. Anyone interested in obtaining some of these choice morsels can contact us via the cell or web page. It soon will be time to try out the catfish, any volunteers?? For the winter months we will be using the building at the entrance way as a heated changing room. At the waters edge we will be using heated tents to add to your comfort. The building is also equipped with coffee and or Hot water brewers, a grill and refrigerator for your use. Construction will be going on around the lake so we would appreciate your flexibility and patience while we improve our surroundings. Dave Shenk will be heading up the ramp in the water project. We will announce the date of construction When the soon to be grandfather of twins remembers it. Congrats Matt and Kelly we are all keeping you in our prayers for happy healthy children. One question or two; Any truth to the rumor of their conception or is it coincidence that you are playing with the name Wally & Bianca?? Just curious. Before winter sets in we would like to get the Habitat in place we will keep you posted on the date. Well, the hurricane didn't phase us but the five inches of rain knocked us back a step or two in the vis arena. However the lake has recovered well and is close to being back to our normal excellent conditions. as I write this the vis is up to the 30 ft range again and the aquatic life seems no worse for the wear. We will are looking to have a Thanksgiving dive. Keep checking the website for more info. In closing We thank you for a great summer season and we look forward to serving your diving needs thru the winter months. Ice conditions if they arise will be posted. Thanks for diving the Wabank.
